Samsung Collegiate Programming Cup (hereafter referred to as SCPC), the largest competition of its kind in Korea, will be held in Samsung Electronics Seoul R&D Campus on July 30th. Before the applications for this year’s SCPC are finalized on June 18th, Samsung Newsroom has taken this opportunity to look at the history of the SCPC since its inception in 2015 in numbers and keywords:

The number of qualifications required to participate in SCPC: all undergraduate and graduate students, regardless of their major, academic history, or nationality, can take part in the SCPC.

The number of years since the first itineration of the SCPC: this year marks the 5th year since the beginning of the application period for the first SCPC, in September 14, 2015.

The number of participants who have joined the SCPC in the previous years: the 4th SCPC in 2018 saw more than 5,000 applications, showing that SCPC has become the premier competition for budding software developers in Korea.

The percentage of international participants in the last year’s SCPC: after international students were included in the competition from the 3rd SCPC in 2017, the ratio of international participants has steadily climbed to more than 20% of the total participants.

50 million KRW was the total amount of cash prize given to the participants of the 1st SCPC, which increased to 100 million KRW from the 3rd SCPC onward. Other perks like participation in international software conferences for the first and second place holders make the SCPC a highly coveted event.

43,724 people have joined the community of ‘Codeground’ , a free education platform offered by Samsung Electronics to promote accessibility to software education.

¹  Participants who perform with distinction in SCPC are given preference in applications to Samsung Electronics. Participants can also use their experience in SCPC as a primer for their eventual career in related IT fields. ²  Codeground is a website offering real-time questions related to algorithm, allowing developing △ creative problem-solving, △and programming abilities. Visitors can also take a look at the tasks issued in previous SCPCs.

If you are interested in software programming, don’t miss the SCPC! Application for the 2019 SCPC can be submitted on the Samsung Research homepage until June 18th. The winner of the 2nd SCPC, Tae Hyun Kim (currently working in the Samsung Research Security Team), encouraged students to take part in the event saying, “If you are interested in programming and software, you’re losing out just by not taking the challenge”.
