Terms & Conditions



1. Object
  • These terms and conditions (“Terms and Conditions”) are to govern and regulate the rights and duties related to Samsung AI Hackathon (“this Contest”) and the use of Official Website (“Official Website”, https://research.samsung.com/aichallenge/hackathon) created and operated by Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. (“Samsung”, “we”, “us”, “our”) to encourage the study of Artificial Intelligence (“AI”) and to cultivate people of ability in the AI.
2. Participant Qualifications
  • Anyone with interest in the field of AI may take part in this Contest regardless of their nationality or organization.
  • However, teams that include employees of Samsung (including international corporations and branch offices) are not included in the list of teams that are eligible for awards.
3. How to Participate and Participation Requirements
  • (1) To take part in this Contest, participants must register by submitting the information required by the managing body to the Official Website of this Contest (https://research.samsung.com/aichallenge/hackathon) between 3 p.m. of July 2, 2018 to 11 p.m. of July 24, 2018 (Korea Standard Time; hereinafter referred to as the “application period”). The Official Website of this Contest is the channel used to handle all matters related to participant registration, the final round, and the results of this Contest.
  • (2) The participants of this Contest are organized into teams (from one to five persons). While participants are required to register individually, they must also supply the name of their team, the name of their team leader, and their role in the team, and the leader of the team must indicate their leadership role on the application form. Each participant may use one account for registration, and may not join two or more teams at the same time. The managing body reserves the right to levy penalties, such as cancellation of registration, expulsion from the final round, and cancellation of event rewards, to participants and the teams of participants (hereinafter referred to as the “participating team”) that use two or more accounts for registration, join two or more teams at the same time, or do other acts of dishonesty. The managing body shall not be held liable for any damages caused by such penalties.
  • (3) The participant may not allow others to use the e-mail address or mobile phone numbers that they used in registering to the contest.
  • (4) The managing body reserves the right to change the e-mail address, team name, and other such items that go against the social sensibility or the well-being of others to random letters without prior notification, and may report such incidents to the participant or the Official Website of this Contest.
  • (5) All damages resulting from the improper input of information from a participant are the accountability of the participant, and the managing body will not be held liable for such damages.
4. How to Proceed This Contest
  • (1) This Contest is made up of the “Idea Contest” and the Final Round, and the teams that will manage to pass the online preliminary round will gain access to the final round.
  • (2) The online preliminary round is limited to online presentations that are offered to the Official Website of this Contest; however, should the need arise, participants may present their projects in the Samsung Electronics R&D Campus in Seoul or in a chosen location of the managing body.
  • (3) The final round shall take place in the Samsung Electronics R&D Campus in Seoul. However, the venue of the final round may be changed by the managing body.
  • (4) This Contest takes the form of a competitive presentation event where participants present and develop their ideas by AI technologies. Thus, participants are subject to review criteria drawn up by the managing body in their evaluation.
  • (5) The teams that pass the online preliminary round are notified first through the Official Website. These teams then receive an e-mail notification about their qualification along with a request for further information and registration for the final round.
  • (6) The managing body reserves the right to waive the qualifications of any team that passes the online preliminary round but fails to provide further registration or information up until seven days before the final round. In such case, another team may be requested to join the final round in its stead.
5. Duties of Participants
  • (1) All participants must take care to actively participate in the final round and must provide for the required expenditure out of their own funds.
  • (2) Members of teams that pass the online preliminary round must take part in the mentoring programs that are offered by the managing body.
  • (3) Participants must not accept help from others or engage in dishonest acts such as hacking, electronic manipulation, and others during both the online preliminary round and the final round, and they must take care not to infringe on intellectual rights held by others or relevant legislation.
  • (4) Participating teams are not allowed to open, provide, or disclose any materials related to the parts of this Contest to other parties during and after the contest. Participants who fail to do so must provide for the damages caused to the managing body.
  • (5) If a participant fails to adhere to the provisions laid out in this article, the managing body reserves the right to disqualify the participating team immediately from this Contest (online preliminary round or final round). If the team was already provided with rewards, it must return such items immediately.
6. Intellectual Property Rights
  • (1) All submitted materials (hereinafter referred to as “submissions”) for the purpose of this Contest, including ideas, software, hardware, and etc., are jointly bound to the members of the participating team. The ratio of ownership is estimated as identical, but any agreement reached by the team prior to the assignment takes precedence.
  • (2) The managing body reserves the right to utilize the submissions free of charge and to distribute the submissions to third parties for the purposes of review, promotion, and more.
7. Promotion of the Contest
  • (1) The managing body may create promotional materials such as articles, photographs, and films for the purposes of promoting or advertising this Contest.
  • (2) The managing body may copy or edit the promotional materials mentioned in the previous section to post such materials on the Official Website, other SNS pages, press coverages, or other promotional schemes.
8. Awarding Plan
  • The managing body reviews and determines the final ranking based on the submissions from the final round teams, and provides monetary and/or material awards as notified prior to the final round based on these rankings.
9. Duties of the Recipients
  • (1) The teams that are selected as recipients of awards (hereinafter referred to as “recipient teams”) must cover for the taxes and other public charges that are levied on the awarded items. If a recipient team refuses to do so, the managing body may waive its rights to the monetary and/or material awards.
  • (2) The recipient teams must provide documentary certifications to confirm their identities and receive the monetary and/or material awards. If a recipient team fails to account for all required documentation within 14 days from the notification of the managing body, the managing body may cancel the award.
  • (3) Team members of recipient teams must take an active part in the awarding ceremony and accompanying events associated with this Contest.
  • (4) If the number of participating teams are deemed inadequate by the managing body, it may reduce the number of recipient teams from the notified levels beforehand.
10. Law and Jurisdiction
  • The Terms and Conditions shall be governed by, and construed, interpreted and enforced in accordance with the substantive law of the Republic of Korea, without giving effect to its conflict of laws provisions. The parties will first attempt to settle all disputes arising out of these Terms and Conditions through good faith negotiation by executives of the parties who have authority to finally settle such dispute. All disputes, controversies or claims among the parties arising out of or in connection with this Agreement (including its existence, validity or termination) shall be finally resolved by arbitration to be held in the Republic of Korea and conducted in English under the Rules of Arbitration of the International Chamber of Commerce; provided, however, that each party may enforce its or its affiliates’ intellectual property rights in any court of competent jurisdiction, including but not limited to equitable relief. The arbitral award shall be final and binding on the parties. Except to the extent entry of judgment and any subsequent enforcement may require disclosure, all matters relating to the arbitration, including the award, shall be held in confidence.
11. Others
  • (1) If any conflict arises between the managing body and the participants, both parties should try to resolve the issue through communication and negotiation to the best of their abilities.
  • (2) The managing body is not liable for any damages caused by the participants or other causes that are non-attributable to it.
  • (3) The managing body is not liable for technical problems or errors associated with the Internet, devices, software, equipment, data transmission, and others. Submitting the submissions in accordance to the correct format, deadline, and method is the responsibility of the participants.
  • (4) The managing body may hold participants accountable for damages that are caused by failing to adhere to these terms or other actions that interfere with the operation of this Contest.
  • (5) The contents of these terms may be subject to change to facilitate the events of this Contest or to account for unforeseen technological problems.
  • (6) The managing body reserves the right to change or cancel the contest schedule based on its requirements. In the event that the managing body’s computer system gets damaged by a virus or technological causes and this Contest is consequently rendered inoperable, the managing body may cancel or stop this Contest.
  • (7) The managing body must abide to the following process in objections or data-related issues arising during this Contest:
    - Any objection or issue that may arise during the final round must be solved by the managing body as soon as possible so as to not disrupt the flow of this Contest.
    - In case of objections and issues that are deemed to have caused a significant amount of impact to the problem-solving process of the participant, the managing body may grant extensions to the participating team in question or all participating teams.
    - In case of objections and issues arising after the completion of the final round, the managing body may review the issue or objection in question and issue a new instance of review or change the assigned scores based on the results.
    - The final call for these decisions lies with the managing body.
  • (8) Participants may request the managing body to discard all submissions after the end of the final round. This request must be granted by the managing body immediately if there are no reasons established in these terms or other justifiable reasons that prohibit the termination of the submissions.
  • These terms will take effect on July 2, 2018, and once the managing body notifies the participants by posting these terms on the Official Website of this Contest or through other means and obtains the agreement of the participants. Applicants who are planning to apply to this Contest are strongly encouraged to read and understand these terms and the privacy statement offered by the managing body before agreeing to join this Contest.
