Samsung Electronics Proves its Technological Mettle in the AES 2019

Samsung Electronics demonstrated its technological proficiency by listing three papers in the top 10 papers selected by the AES (Audio Engineering Society) in its 2019 convention

With its headquarters in New York, United States, the AES is the world’s most prestigious academic society in audio technology and engineering

The three papers selected for the top 10 list were submitted by Samsung Research America (SRA) Audio Lab, namely the △ Loudspeaker Port Design for Optimal Performance and Listening Experience, △ Nonlinear Control of Loudspeaker Based on Output Flatness and Trajectory Planning, and △ Personalized and Self-Adapting Headphone Equalization Using Near Field Response.

In general, the speakers are divided into two types: sealed and ported speakers. Ported speakers tend to not only produce deeper bass than the sealed speakers but also create more noise because of the airflow within the box. The first paper addresses how the port noise can be reduced, thereby optimizing the speakers’ performance.

The second paper is concerned with the algorithm technologies that can control the distortion of the sound, thus allowing its precise recreation. Because all sounds produced by speakers tend to be accompanied by irregular distortions from electric currents, this technology allows the speaker to control the nonlinearities before producing sound.

The third paper covers a headphone-related technology that can measure the structure of the ear, eardrums, and user’s displacement to optimize the sound produced by the headphone.

Vice President Allan Devantier of Samsung Research America and the director of its Audio Lab commented, “I am very happy to see the audio technology of Samsung Electronics being recognized through the AES. We will continue to develop new and innovative technologies and work together with our business departments to enrich our users’ experiences.”
