Samsung Developer Conference 2023 – The Sneak Peek of the Future.

This year, on October 5th, the Moscone Center in San Francisco held an inspiring event where everyone could familiarize themselves with upcoming features and technologies that will be shared to the public in upcoming months – Samsung Developer Conference 2023.

67 speakers (including 11 Keynotes) from Samsung Electronics, SmartThings, Aqara, CLIKA, CVTE, Datumo, Dr.Tail, MIT, NVIDIA, Ocilion IPTV Technologies GmbH, TagHive Inc., Unity Technologies, VESSL AI and Whisk gave to the audience (both onsite and online) the opportunity to touch what will be offered in the near future.

Right after keynote speakers’ presentations tech sessions started. They were held in three session rooms and in the Open Theater in parallel. SDC’23 topics covered such areas as: Platform Innovation, Mobile Experience, Screen Experience, Home Experience, Health Experience and Sustainability / Innovation.

Beyond that, everyone could put one's hands in one of the Code Labs: try Samsung Health Stack, customize Flex Window and develop some widgets, customize styles of a watch with the Watch Face Studio, experience SmartThings Find development, see how partner services can be added to the Samsung Wallet, build a Matter IoT app with SmartThings Home API, create a Matter virtual device and take some measures with Samsung Privileged Health SDK.

This year Samsung R&D Institute Poland (SRPOL) sent his representatives from the most impactful projects of the Health area. We operated two code labs and the exhibition booth where Samsung Privileged Health SDK API was presented. Many participants and potential partners visited booths, expressing much interest in not only the basic concept, but also in technical details regarding Samsung Privileged Health SDK and Health Stack. We hope they got hooked and will dig into utilizing them in their own solutions! For the SDC SRPOL developed two applications to show off our engagement in health promotion.

The first one, measures skin temperature on the Galaxy Watch6 and presents the results on the screen within 5 seconds (the feature had its release just before the SDC23 in version 1.2 of the Samsung Privileged Health SDK library). The second one – a WearOS application, measures heart rate and inter-beat interval and sends the results to a paired mobile device. In the new version of the library the heart rate tracker has been expanded and it can now measure inter-beat interval with higher frequency (up to four times a second). Both “made in SRPOL” apps make use of Samsung Privileged Health SDK which is greatly promoted by our company.

The other Health solution worth mentioning is Health Stack which is developed by Samsung Research and Samsung Research America. This solution (comprising of a web and a mobile applications) can be applied in hospitals or research centers and its purpose is to connect a patient with a doctor. In cooperation with SRA, SRPOL started collaboration with the Polish National Institute of Cardiology (IKARD) to adapt the Health Stack to monitor IKARD patients who underwent heart surgeries.

The general idea of Samsung engagement in Health, as was presented by Hon Park during the keynotes, is to use all the devices and services available to the user and lead him through the whole day, in order to develop and sustain healthy behaviors. For instance, when Galaxy Watch detects that you fall asleep, the temperature in the room cools down, the lights dim and the devices power off to save the energy. During the night, they monitor user’s sleep, wake him up at a proper sleep stage, remind about taking medicines, monitor heart rate, and send notifications about any abnormalities.
What is more, after you work out, basing on burned off calories and information from other sensors like BMI, your phone will show you food recipes you might want to use which is best for your health.

Two more SRPOL representatives – Kamil Morawski and Konrad Klimczuk – were among them thanks to the public announcement of our project – Automated Test Suite. The tool was developed by our team which is an integral part of B2B & Cloud Team in SRPOL. Since we contribute to WWST (Works With SmartThings program), Automated Test Suite was designed and developed to cooperate with the SmartThings Console that supports Samsung's partners in integrating their IoT devices with SmartThings ecosystem.

SDC’23 gave us tens of opportunities to not only meet Samsung engineers in the Tech Square, but also to talk with partner companies’ representatives, as well as to dive deep into newest technologies presented directly with a lot of possibilities to ask challenging questions and share ideas. We were pretty impressed by the TagHive’s “Saathi” solution that had already improved the learning systems in schools in South Korea and in India. What is more, software daredevils could take part in Hacker’s Playground. Another interesting way to experience the conference was to collect special stamps (after visiting tech booths or completing code labs) and exchange them for raffle tickets so at the end of the conference the attendees could win the newest Samsung electronic devices.

What gave us – IoT enthusiasts – real shivers? The fact that very soon SmartThings users will have a possibility to locate and control their devices on the map they’ll draw in the SmartThings application! What’s more? Once a user buys a new SmartThings Station (that Works As a SmartThings Hub), the whole IoT devices network may be quickly migrated from the current SmartThings hub – believe me, this is really a time saver!

We saw a smart oven that recognizes what meal is inside and suggests how to cook it. We wouldn’t have been ourselves if we didn’t challenge it, so we asked to put two meals inside next to each other and it passed the test! For those who are familiar with “the Silicon Valley show” – the Samsung Smart oven is light years ahead of “the hotdog identifying app”.

Personally for us, Samsung Developer Conference 2023 was also a great opportunity to meet many colleagues from SmartThings US and from HQ teams who we are working with on a daily basis. We are very grateful that we could be a part of this fantastic event!
