Last October 19, 2018, one of the major flagship CSR programs of SRPH – Coding for Kids- was officially launched through a kick-off event held in EM’s Signal Village Elementary School in Taguig, Philippines.
The Coding for Kids program, which involves teaching basic computer science skills to elementary students, is SRPH’s own way of contributing to the infrastructure of a better science and technology education program here in the Philippines. The program aims to cultivate young innovators and engineers in the Philippines. It is also a way for SRPH to use its software development skills to give back to the community. Coding for Kids is also a partnership with SEPCO, and will utilize the Samsung Smart Classrooms build all over the Philippines.
The successful kick-off event held in EM’s Signal Village Elementary School quadrangle was attended by SRPH MD Yongduk Hwang and SEPCO President Kevin Lee, as well as officials from the Department of Education of the Philippines. Taguig City mayor Hon. Lani Cayetano was also present to commemorate the launching of this program and to thank Samsung for all its contributions to the city.

After the kick-off event, the first session of the program was held. The session was led by Meranno Principe (CSR Team Lead), along with other SRPH volunteer facilitators. During the first session, the students were able to learn about what codes and algorithms are for by doing a simple logic exercise entitled “My Robotic Friend”. The 25 Grade 5 students who joined the session thoroughly enjoyed the exercise and were able to apply simple logic to teach their “robotic friend” to create a pattern through stacking cups.

The successful kick-off of the Coding for Kids program is very meaningful for both SRPH and SEPCO as it not only symbolizes a great partnership between two entities but also it is also one way to show that Samsung, as a global company, takes its mission of contributing to the global community seriously.
In line with Samsung’s vision “Inspire the World, Create the Future”, the Coding for Kids Program is a means to ensure that the future of the Filipino youth, especially in terms of science in technology, will be bright.
