Researcher as Samsung Research wins the 2021 IEEE ComSoc Asia-Pacific Outstanding Paper Award

Dr. Hyoungju Ji at Samsung Research's Advanced Communications Research Center (ACRC) has been recently announced with the 2021 IEEE ComSoc Asia-Pacific Outstanding Paper Award Winners.

The IEEE ComSoc Asia-Pacific Outstanding Paper Award is awarded annually by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Communications Society (IEEE ComSoc) for outstanding original papers authored by members in the Asia Pacific region, and published in IEEE ComSoc journals and conferences over the last three years (January 2018 to December 2020).

The paper, titled “Ultra-Reliable and Low-Latency Communications in 5G Downlink: Physical Layer Aspects”, introduced the ultra-reliable and low-latency communications (URLLC) which is a new service category adopted in 5G. The paper provides a top-down overview of URLLC in an accessible way, thus enhancing the understanding of new concept to the researchers and practitioners. Notable feature of the paper is the proposals of useful physical layer solutions to reduce the physical layer latency, such as packet and frame structures, scheduling schemes (instant and reservation-based scheduling), and coexistence handling techniques (reactive and proactive strategies).

Speaking about receiving the IEEE ComSoc Asia-Pacific Outstanding Paper Award, Dr. Ji said, “I am honored to have received this award with our ACRC leaders and members. I believe this award is a reflection of collaborative efforts on 5G wireless communications standard in Samsung.”

This prestigious annual award has been presented to Dr. Ji (first author) and his co-authors in ACRC, Dr.Sunho Park, Dr. Jeongho Yeo, Dr. Younsun Kim (Master in SR), Dr. Juho Lee (Fellow in SR), and Prof. Byonghyo Shim at Seoul National University. Winners will receive award at the flagship conference event in the 2021 IEEE Global Communications Conference (IEEE GLOBECOM) in December.
