Samsung Electronics today announced that Dr. Xue (Steve) Liu of the Samsung AI Center (SAIC) in Montreal has been named a Distinguished Member of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), the world's largest educational and scientific computing society.
The Distinguished Member grade level of ACM was initiated in 2006 to recognize ACM Professional Members who have achieved a significant accomplishment in, or made a significant impact on, the computing field. The selection criteria is a recipient must “have achieved a significant level of accomplishment, or made a significant impact in the field of computing, computer science and/or information technology. In addition, it is expected that a Distinguished Member serves as a mentor and role model, guiding technical career development and contributing to the field beyond the norm” according to the ACM announcement.
Dr. Liu is VP R&D, Chief Scientist, and Co-Director of Samsung’s Montreal AI Center. He leads the R&D of novel AI solutions for real-world applications including the intelligent operation of 5G networks. He is an internationally recognized expert in Intelligent Systems Design and AI Applications, Performance Management of Computing and Communications Systems, Internet of Things, Cloud Computing and Big Data.
In his work, Dr. Liu applies insights from a wide range of disciplines, including AI and machine learning, feedback control, optimization, and statistics to solve challenging problems in real-world applications. He has published over 350 papers in top venues in the computer and communications fields and authored/co-authored 5 research monographs. His research on many fronts has a significant impact in both academia and industry.
“I feel honored and fortunate to be chosen and recognized by the ACM. It is intellectually rewarding to see my work help contribute to society and advance the field,” said Dr. Liu, “I want to thank all those who have taught me, supported me, and helped me in making me where I am now. This recognition motivates and encourages me to move forward for more discoveries and inventions in the years to come and make a continuous impact.”
Dr. Liu received a B.S. in Applied Mathematics and M.E. in Automatic Control from Tsinghua University in 1996 and 1999, respectively. He completed his Ph.D. in Computer Science with multiple distinctions at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2006. He has been a professor of computer science at McGill University since 2007, and a William Dawson Scholar since 2014. Dr. Liu is a Fellow of the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) and a recipient of multiple awards, including the Mitacs Award for Exceptional Leadership – Professor from Mitacs, the Outstanding Young Computer Science Researcher Award from the Canadian Association of Computer Science, and the Tomlinson Science Award from McGill University.
