Samsung Researcher Receives an Industrial Service Medal for the Contribution to 5G Standardization

Samsung Electronics today announced that Dr. Younsun Kim, Master, Samsung Research at Samsung Electronics received an Industrial Service Medal from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy at the "2024 World Standards Day Ceremony,” held on October 15.

Kim was recognized for his activities and contributions in the mobile communication technology standardization for more than 20 years. In particular, Kim has contributed to the standardization for the 5G and the next-generation mobile communication as the Chair of the Radio Access Network Working Group 1 (RAN WG1) at the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) since May 2021.

3GPP is a consortium of seven regional telecommunication standards organizations established in 1998 to develop a unified global standard for mobile telecommunications. RAN WG1, the largest working group within the project with more than 600 delegates, is responsible for the development of the physical layer specifications of the 3GPP radio access technology.

Younsun Kim is currently leading the several technical areas to evolve 5G, called "5G-Advanced," including improvement of 5G coverage, reduction of energy consumption in the network, and so on. Furthermore, he is conducting a preliminary discussion on candidate technologies for 6G, which is expected to be commercialized around 2030.
