Engineering the Future: Three Women Leaders Shaping Innovation at Samsung R&D Institute India – Bangalore

Technology evolves rapidly, but some things remain constant, the power of curiosity, the courage to embrace change, and the determination to solve problems that matter.

At Samsung R&D Institute India – Bangalore (SRI-B), these qualities have helped shape generations of innovation. From pioneering AI-powered experiences and breakthrough system technologies to transforming how millions capture and experience memories through their smartphones, women engineers continue to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of Samsung products.

We are celebrating three accomplished leaders whose journeys exemplify the spirit of innovation, resilience, and lifelong learning, K. Roopa Sheshadri, Anuradha Kanukotla, and Vanisri Srikrishna Jallapelli.

For Roopa, her journey began with a fascination for logic, mathematics, and structured problem-solving, which naturally led her toward engineering. Over the course of 23 years at Samsung Research Institute India (SRI-B), she witnessed the industry transform through multiple waves of technological change. She later made a bold decision that would redefine her career. Despite already being an established leader, Roopa chose to be an individual contributor role to deeply understand artificial intelligence and generative AI from the ground up.

"True leadership in technology means having the courage to unlearn, relearn, and never letting an established title limit a vision for the future," she says.

Today, she is recognized as one of SRI-B's leading voices in Visual Intelligence, having led designing and optimization on-device solutions across the core domains of Generative AI, Computer Vision, and Advanced Image Processing directly powering the next-generation Camera features, Gallery frameworks, and premium multimedia editing suites (like "Object Eraser" and Movie/Photo Studio) which are used by millions of Galaxy users around the world. Her contributions have earned numerous recognitions, including Best Patent Awards, the Samsung Best Paper Award, the MDC Best Project Award, and the prestigious Zinnov Next Generation Women Leader Award 2025.

As she progressed into senior leadership roles, Roopa discovered that some of the most complex challenges were not technical.

"As I moved into senior leadership, the most persistent challenge wasn't technical, it was influence without authority, especially in rooms where I was the only woman," she reflects.

Over time, she learned to build alignment through expertise, collaboration, and thoughtful communication rather than hierarchy alone. By creating consensus across teams, organizations, and geographies, she developed a leadership style rooted in knowledge, trust, and shared purpose.

Beyond her work at SRI-B, Roopa is passionate about nurturing the broader innovation ecosystem. Through industry forums, university collaborations, Samsung PRISM, Samsung Innovation Campus, and Samsung Solve for Tomorrow, she actively mentors students and emerging innovators, helping bridge the gap between academia and industry.

Within SRI-B, she champions a culture where experimentation is encouraged and learning is continuous. Through Samsung's Women Leadership Development Program, she has also mentored aspiring women leaders, helping them build confidence, visibility, and leadership presence.

Her advice to the next generation is both simple and timely.

"Technical excellence is the foundation, but pairing that competence with the confidence to claim your space is what changes the game."

Looking back, there is one lesson she wishes she had learned earlier.

"In an AI-driven era, learning to unlearn is a survival skill. Technologies will change, but the ability to adapt will always remain your greatest strength."

For Anuradha, engineering has always been about transforming limitations into possibilities.

Drawn to technology by the challenge of solving complex real-world problems, she spent her early years at SRI-B exploring Android platform architecture from end to end, developing a deep understanding of systems engineering.

"I was drawn to the challenge of solving complex real-world problems, to take something slow and make it fast, something limited and make it limitless, something impossible and make it possible," she says.

Over time, that expertise became the foundation for innovations that have contributed to some of Samsung's most advanced user experiences. A defining moment in her career came during the Galaxy S9 era, when her team successfully addressed critical performance challenges affecting the user experience.

"The optimizations we delivered shifted the conversation from who I was to what I could deliver," she recalls.

Those successes not only strengthened her confidence but also reinforced a leadership philosophy grounded in perseverance and impact. Anuradha acknowledges that being a woman in a traditionally male-dominated industry often meant working harder to prove herself. Yet she never allowed those challenges to define her.

"The biggest challenge was the invisible weight of representation, the expectation that as a woman leader, I had to be flawless to be considered equal," she says.

Balancing a demanding career while raising two sons required resilience, determination, and a strong support system. In 2023, she became the first woman from SRI-B's R&D organization to be appointed Director and Group Head, a milestone that represented both personal achievement and a new possibility for future women leaders.

"Leadership isn't about having all the answers. It's about asking the right questions, staying rooted in purpose, and lifting others as you rise."

Throughout her journey, she has remained committed to creating opportunities for others. From mentoring more than 600 engineers to participating in women-focused leadership forums and career conversations, Anuradha continues to champion a culture of inclusion and growth. Her message to aspiring engineers is clear: don't wait for opportunities to come to you.

"Don't wait for permission to lead. Build expertise, innovate boldly, and step forward."

As emerging technologies reshape industries around the world, she believes women have a unique opportunity to help define the future.

"The future belongs to those who dare to shape it."

For Vanisri, the inspiration to pursue engineering came from one of the earliest role models in her life, her father. An electrical engineer by profession, he approached every challenge with confidence, curiosity, and a willingness to learn.

"Seeing my father solve problems and build things with passion inspired me to pursue engineering," she says. "More importantly, it taught me the value of independence and confidence in any situation."

Over the last 23 years, that inspiration has evolved into a career defined by innovation, collaboration, and continuous growth. Vanisri credits SRI-B's culture of fairness, mentorship, and equal opportunity for creating an environment where talent can thrive.

"Samsung and SRI-B have always encouraged people to grow based on their capabilities and contributions," she says.

A turning point in her journey came when she was entrusted with a critical system leadership role that exposed her to end-to-end product development and stakeholder management across teams and organizations. The experience not only strengthened her technical understanding but also helped shape her leadership style.

"It boosted my confidence and taught me how to bring people together to achieve a common goal."

As she moved into leadership positions, Vanisri says one of her earliest challenges was earning the confidence of stakeholders and proving herself in increasingly larger roles. The trust and empowerment she received from her leaders, however, encouraged her to take on new responsibilities and push beyond perceived limitations. Today, she believes leadership is less about directing people and more about enabling them to succeed. One of the most important lessons she has learned is that delegation is not simply about distributing work.

"It is a way to develop people, empower them, and expand the collective strength of the team."

She also believes leaders play an important role in creating environments where everyone feels heard.

"Open communication and collaboration create an environment where diverse talent can thrive."

For young women considering engineering as a career, her advice is grounded in optimism and self-belief.

"Believe in yourself. Love your work. Stay curious. Curiosity can create wonders."

Looking ahead, she is excited about the possibilities emerging in fields such as ethical AI, robotics, and virtual reality, areas she believes will create unprecedented opportunities for the next generation of women engineers.

While their journeys are unique, Roopa, Anuradha, and Vanisri are united by a common belief: growth comes from curiosity, resilience, and a willingness to embrace change. Their stories reflect the many paths that leadership can take, whether through reinvention, perseverance, collaboration, or mentorship. Together, they have helped shape a culture where future generations of engineers can thrive.
