Designer to the Core

For Satish Madhukar Patil, design was never just a profession - it was instinct. While he began his career as an engineer, it wasn’t too long before he realized his true calling laid elsewhere. Trusting in his instincts, he went on to study Industrial Design at the Industrial Design Centre (IDC), Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, setting the stage for a career defined by curiosity and problem-solving.

Over the years, he worked across an extraordinary range of design domains - appliances, shampoo packaging, automotive styling & healthcare devices, and eventually digital user experiences. He helped build a design practice at his previous organization from scratch, growing it into a team of over 150 members, while also establishing the UX design and research function.

But after nearly 17 years of building and scaling teams, something began to shift. The work that once revolved around design had gradually become about operations, revenue, and management. For Satish, the realization was clear: he wasn’t done being a designer.

“I didn’t want to stop designing,” he says. “The thrill of position or revenue never interested me as much as the joy of solving problems.”

A Leap Toward Reinvention

In January 2016, Satish made what he describes as a decision that ran counter to the advice of many friends and peers when he decided to join Samsung Research Institute India – Bangalore (SRI-B). For Satish, the decision was driven by one simple belief: Samsung was one of the most innovative companies in the world, and it offered the opportunity to work on the kind of design problems that truly excited him.

Within weeks of joining, Satish found himself working on an unexpected challenge, which not many were willing to take up. Satish grabbed the opportunity and took ownership for end-to-end UX for a smartphone built on the Tizen platform. It was this project that cemented his bond with Samsung from the start.

Within six months, he led a team that designed the end-to-end user experience for the Tizen Z4, developed entirely from India. The project not only strengthened his confidence, but also helped him feel at home within the SRI-B ecosystem.

Reinventing Through Every Challenge

Just as Satish had begun finding his rhythm, the evolving tech landscape called for a fundamental shift in user experiences, and once again, he faced a familiar crossroads - reinvention.

But instead of seeing it as a setback, he leaned into it.

He began building new capabilities around IoT and wearable multi-device experiences, expanding the scope of his work into emerging technology ecosystems. Over time, his focus naturally evolved toward the next frontier shaping the tech world: Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Today, much of his work revolves around exploring how AI can make everyday experiences better for Galaxy users - whether through smarter personalization or more intuitive Smart Home interactions.

For Satish, the challenge lies in navigating the delicate balance between technology and experience. In design, there has long been a debate about whether form follows function or the other way around – a conversation that has evolved further in the world of AI-driven products.

“Technology and experience are influencing each other deeply,” he says. “And keeping pace with that evolution is both the biggest opportunity and the biggest challenge. “Working in an advanced R&D institute like SRI-B adds another layer of complexity. Results aren’t always immediate, and breakthroughs are never guaranteed. Maintaining team motivation and resilience over long periods of experimentation becomes just as important as solving the design problem itself.”

Moments That Shaped the Journey

Over nearly a decade at SRI-B, Satish has accumulated many memories that stand out. While designing the end-to-end UX for the Tizen Z4 remains one of the most significant milestones, another proud moment came in 2018, when his team developed an innovation framework for SmartThings - one that continues to influence the connectivity experience even today.

Another memory that he particularly cherishes is a simpler idea that emerged during the COVID-19 pandemic: a handwash reminder app for smartwatches. He remembers the day the idea was conceived – the team was simply discussing how they could create meaningful innovations for users, and Satish shared this idea off the top of his mind. And within seconds, without any questions or proof of concept, the then Managing Director jumped aboard, encouraging the team to get started on it. Eight weeks later, the app was ready for launch. This openness to ideas and innovation left an indelible impression on Satish. He was thrilled to work alongside such leaders, whose ability to challenge assumptions and push teams to think beyond what seems possible often reshaped the way problems were approached.

“Sometimes they can puncture your best-laid plans in minutes,” Satish admits with a smile. “But that’s what makes the work interesting.”

An Infinite Canvas of Possibilities

Ten years into his journey at SRI-B, Satish still finds himself driven by the same thing that first allured him here: the excitement of solving new problems.

For him, SRI-B’s greatest strength lies in the freedom to explore uncharted territory. Designers and engineers are constantly exposed to new technologies, new domains, and new questions that push them to rethink what they know.

“Sometimes you feel like you’re on the edge, wondering if you know enough or if you’re thinking hard enough.” But that sense of challenge is precisely what keeps the work meaningful.

Above all, Satish credits his journey to the people around him. From teammates who consistently deliver on ambitious ideas to leaders who trust teams with bold explorations, collaboration remains the backbone of every success.

“You are nobody in isolation, without your team,” he says.

And in a place where innovation is constant and possibilities are endless, Satish continues to do what he set out to do a decade ago - simply to innovate, and keep solving hard problems.
