As improving the quality of life is emerging as a key goal for our society, the importance of life care has been highlighted. As social and environmental changes that affect the quality of life progress rapidly, there is a special growing need for a variety of services to respond appropriately to these changes. Moreover, an expectation of new experience and the needs that make our living more enriched and comfortable are considered as an important value which determines the quality of life.
First of all, in terms of life care, the concerns for air quality to be free from fine dust, floating viruses, and harmful gas found in living spaces are at an increased level. In addition, due to an increased interest in health and beauty care for the improvement of a person’s life, there is an increased demand for the development of related technologies.
Another example of this change is that as we move into an aging society in earnest, the target of care is changing and the cost of treating the elderly population is increasing, but we are short of resources. The worsening problems of air pollution and the consequent increase in environmental diseases are raising people's concerns.
In this respect, the life care that people want goes beyond just health care. We want to make the environment around us better, to feel younger, to live vibrant lives, and to address social issues. In the future, life care that can meet people's needs and respond to social and environmental changes are expected to become smarter and more diverse based on rapid advances in AI, sensor, and data analytics technologies.
In response, Samsung Research is developing AI sensor technologies enabling personalized care solutions for air quality, beauty & skin, food, health and new lifestyles to improve the quality of life of consumers and help address global societal challenges.
On the other hand, people's needs towards the new experience that makes better living are getting diverse and the required standard is rising. In particular, people’s interest in next-generation smart devices as substitutes and supplementary goods of smartphones is increasing, and relevant technologies are developing since the smartphone market has reached saturation.
Therefore, Samsung Research aims to deliver a new level of user experience and provide the value of better living to consumers. To achieve this goal, we are focusing on core technologies for smart devices including AR glasses, next generation wearable and hearable devices and so on.
AR technologies in particular are gaining attention as one of the new growth engines of the future. AR Glasses are expected by many experts as a next-generation IT device because they have the advantages of large-screen immersiveness compared to smartphones, unfettered freedom of not having to hold it, immediacy of not having to take it out of one’s pocket, and a truly private display.
However, there exists a limit in the proper experience of AR Glasses: its usability is compromised because of the increased weight and volume to achieve high performance and performance is compromised if the weight and volume are decreased to deliver higher usability.
Given the limits, Samsung Research aims to secure core AR technologies that are necessary to realize high-performance AR glasses for daily use without spatiotemporal limits and with promising AR services for the future.
To this end, Samsung Research focuses on obtaining core hardware technologies that can provide usability and convenience while maintaining the form factor of the regular glasses, such as ultra-thin/wide lens optics, ultra-small/high-resolution display engines, and autofocus technology to relieve dizziness. Furthermore, we are developing AR software technologies that are needed to provide an immersive AR experience through real-virtual seamless mixing and to realize promising AR scenarios for the future.
